Police Drummer Blasts Reunion Concert
June 01, 2007 - Rock and Pop
By Associated Press
The crowds have been ecstatic, but Police drummer Stewart Copeland has been anything but impressed so far by the band's reunion concerts.
Copeland trashed Wednesday's concert in Vancouver, British Columbia, in a posting on his Web site the morning after. "This is ... lame. We are the mighty Police and we are totally at sea."
His recollection of events — or, rather, band bloopers — is both scathing and comical. For one thing, Copeland noted, he failed to strike a gong at the right time, ruining "the big pompous opening to the show."
The rock trio of Copeland, singer-bassist Sting and guitarist Andy Summers flubbed their performance of the song "Message in a Bottle," said Copeland, who didn't hear Summers' opening guitar riff. Sting then missed his cue from Copeland — "so we are half a bar out of sync with each other. Andy is in Idaho," he wrote.
That misfortune extended into the second song, "Synchronicity II." They couldn't "get on the good foot," said Copeland, before going on to criticize Sting's footwork during the set.
"The mighty Sting momentarily looks like a petulant pansy instead of the god of rock," he wrote.
The disorder continued "for song after song." But afterward, he said, they fell "into each other's arms laughing hysterically."
"It usually takes about four or five shows in a tour before you get to the disaster gig. But we're The Police so we are a little ahead of schedule," he said.
Their next show will be Saturday in the Canadian city of Edmonton. The tour will take the Police through North and South America, Europe and Australia by the time it wraps in early 2008.

Gustavo Santaolalla Climbs to the Top of the Mountain
Noted composer Gustavo Santaolalla said when he first got the script to the Oscar-winning movie Brokeback Mountain, he saw it as a romantic tale.
“I always saw it as a story of love. I compared what was different or similar to a traditional love story. These personalities get married, have families, and it just never really hit me as a gay movie,” Santaolalla said in a recent interview.
Santaolalla won the Oscar for Best Original Score for Brokeback Mountain. “It was a universal movie that happened to have a moment in the movie where there was a relationship between two men. But I think it's not a movie that was meant for a community. I think it really has the universal thing and at the end of the day, it has meaning for all of us.
“I don't think it matters what religion or genre you are. At the end of the day, even though we may all be different, we're all very similar and there is a common thread which unites us and that is love, solitude, and pain.”
The film stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Randy Quaid.
The soundtrack for Brokeback Mountain, which was produced by Santaolalla, won a Golden Globe for “A Love That Will Never Grow Old.”
Latin alternative fans will recognize Santaolalla from his production work on Juanes, Molotov, Julieta Venegas and Café Tacuba.
He has also won the BAFTA Award for his original score on the film Motorcycle Diaries and the Flanders Film Festival's best original score in Belgium for his work on 21 Grams. He also scored North Country and the critically acclaimed Amores Perros.
The Brokeback Mountain soundtrack also features tunes by Emmylou Harris, Mary McBride, Rufus Wainwright, Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle and Willie Nelson.
Working on rock artists may seem quite a bit different than working on movie soundtracks, but Santaolalla says it's still all about getting to know the artists, or in this case, the film director, on what they hope to accomplish.
“In movies, I have been lucky to work with big name directors — Gonzalez Iñárritu, Walter Salles, Niki Caro and Ang Lee,” Santaolalla said from his Los Angeles office. “These are talented directors who have big stories to tell and they tell it very well. “So what you don't want to do with the music is interrupt the storyline in any way. The music is simply a backdrop over the story and the personalities.”

BOB MARLEY
By Lars Brandle, London
Bob Marley is to posthumously make history by becoming the first artist to release a full album on the USB Memory Stick format in Britain.
Marley's longtime label home Island Records will issue the reggae star's legendary 1977 album "Exodus" on June 4. The release date also marks the 30th anniversary of the album.
A limited edition of 4,000 unit will be issued in the Rastafarian colors of red, green and gold. The 256 MB stick will contain the 10 original "Exodus" tracks, plus three videos taped at London's Rainbow Theatre in June 1977 and Marley "wallpaper."
Island is also reissuing the album CD as a special edition, packaged in a "hardback" case. A 5,000 limited edition deluxe CD will additionally be released, featuring a separate DVD of 12 tracks from Marley's historic Rainbow concerts in the summer of 1977. Vinyl and DVD releases are also on the slate.
"At Island, we believe it's the role of record labels to offer the consumer choice, and, where possible, to extend our format portfolio," says London-based Island Records GM Jon Turner, in a statement. "The unparalleled range that we are offering on Exodus certainly meets these objectives."
Separately, an "Exodus" book, published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson and featuring more than 200 images, will be issued to mark the occasion. In the United Kingdom, national broadcaster BBC will screen an Anthony Wall-direct 90-minute film, "Arena: Bob Marley's Exodus 77" at the end of May.
The "Exodus" USB release comes on the heels of the groundbreaking October 2006 U.K. release in the format of the Keane single "Nothing In My Way." The Fratellis' "Baby Fratelli" was also released on memory stick in March of this year. Both USB initiatives were driven by Island Records.
